Bike Hangars

Before excitement becomes too much for these street cycle hangars it may be worth while to remember what happened to one such left under the rail bridge in Deodar Road - the end panel was pealed off much as one might peal off the lid of a tin of sardines: they are not a safe place to leave cycles, and I am left wondering the motive for their promotion.

Andy, drones would be used to despatch police on the ground. Similar to the costly helicopters that they use but without the noise. Would at least be greener.Perhaps the helicopters could be replaced by a helium balllon??Crime is on the up with a large percentage being carried out during the day. The policy of blaming the victim has not worked.I simply ask for the same standard of policing afforded to politicians and members of state. If patrols not effective for the public then surely not effective for all??Theft is one of the things that deter people from cycling and cycling is needed to tackle the climate emergency the government says there is.

If the thieves are cute enough to cover their noise by trains passing overhead I suspect a few random police patrols would not cause them any problems.Would a drone get under the bridge un noticed and whaf would it prove? A picture of a guy with a mask and a hoodie.

Police patrols might help.Perhaps they should use the s-Scooters they have confiscated.Perhaps even a drone - I suspect things will get a lot worse before there is any change of policy!

This site won't let me log off as Put Soc and post as me, and I don't want to reboot my computer just yet.Only to say that I was told that the Deodar Rd bike hangar was broken into because it was positioned right under the railway bridge, and the crooks timed using the angle grinder with trains going over head. Not saying they wouldn't use angle grinders in broad daylight (a neighbour just had his new bike stolen that way in the West End last week!) but more people at night would hear it when no trains can be used to disguise the noise.Vicky

My mistake to not put an 's' on Govt.  With two main parties vying either for power or not to lose it - it makes it more difficult to take action with the worry of alienating voters.

Hello Ed,I think even before Blair.  Was it in the summer of 1991 or 1994 that fumes from cars became a greater problem and people who never had asthma before became sufferers then?

Matt, I thought it was all the other ailments that caused them more problems, who might have been on cancer treatment or Heart problems or other disabilities. It still doesn't hide the fact that it possibly came from Wuhan. Or another Country trying to kill us all off, something in your water.

All this non stop Air Pollution, I suppose this caused all the Deaths to Covid. All Hire Bikes most of those are all still in their dock. All the new pavements in the High Street, have caused more congestion and fumes.

"Reducing the size of the state is part of the ideology .."Philippa, that may be so but I believe the bigger question is how we use state resources however big or small they are."..Govt ignoring the illegal air pollution "to be fair I seem to remember it being reported that the diesel warning were known way back when Blair was PM.Although air pollution is a big killer I believe spin has killed more people. Hiding facts, distorting the truth, diverting the natural outcome of decisions the country takes across all policies. Too much secrecy and not enough transparency now and probably all governments but definitely all in my life time.

Reducing the size of the state is part of the ideology and is repeated each time the Tories are in power. After so many years of Govt ignoring the illegal air pollution in the country and having been taken to the High Court and losing several times it finally came to the crunch where action needed to be taken.COP 26 which we are supposed to be hosting in Glasgow is getting closer.https://ukcop26.org/

Although it seems to in other countries. It must be like the snow or leaves unique to the UK I guess??It's strange that the people responsible for reducing police resources via budgets and policy are themselves immune from their own decisions.

The shelters I believe have gold secure standard which is no real mat h for angle grinders. I'm not sure if the rental includes any insurance, I couldn't find any mention so possibly not.I do not believe the Putney double decker bicycle rack has any cctv.Sadly old fashioned policing is the only way to reduce this type of crime.Did I mention the connection between crime and green....

I would hope that in that case feedback would have been sent back to the manufacturer and marketer so that attention could be paid to any design weaknesses.  Also the positioning of them might perhaps be considered a little more so that they are under a bit more surveillance. It is very difficult to stop a very determined thief but you can make it more difficult.
