Many of these new devices - ev's, heat pumps, micro-CHP's, Tesla Power Walls are more energy efficient or more carbon neutral, but they are more expensive because of the cost of the device. At the moment, a heat pump will use 1/3 the electricity of conventional electric heating, but it will not pay for itself for about 15 years - at which time the heat pump will likely be worn out. These things are all expensive because they are new designs and made in small volumes. They could be economical if made in large volumes but that it is unlikely to happen unless many people get behind them. That in turn is unlikely to happen without government support.I have a gas boiler. When it needs replacing, it would be great if I could get one that runs on hydrogen or natural gas. That way I would be ready for a national switchover of the UK gas network to carbon-free hydrogen. Even boiler manufacturers like Baxi are asking the government to make these kind of boilers compulsory. But the government is dragging its feet. I don't think it is really that helpful to make an example of Sadiq Khan or any other single individual. Khan-bashing is a rather dreary and well-worn hobby horse.
