Milestone outside Methodist Church
Does anyone know what happened to the triangular iron ‘milestone’ which, before World War Two, stood against the wall outside the Methodist Church on Upper Richmond Road? It was inscribed 8 MILES FROM THE STANDARD CORNHILL and 6¾ MILES FROM WESTMINSTER BRIDGE and was no longer there at the end of the war. Possible reasons for its disappearance are: a) it was removed, as many were, at the start of the war, as a ‘security measure’, stored and lost; b) it was irreparably damaged by the blast of the V1 which fell opposite on the morning of 18th June 1944, or was inadvertently disposed of with the resulting debris. Grateful for any info.
