Hammersmith Bridge reopens this weekend

Does anyone know if the rickshaws will be back when the bridge reopens? They are useful for the less able bodied, and also for hospital appointments etc.

Yes  Miles, I agree as I also come from Barnes originally and went to school in Sheen and worked in Olympia when I was young. But what ever Fleur Anderson puts her face on goes pear shaped. I know for years the bridge has had problems. But the amount of money they have from Richmond residents is a lot. This should have been sorted ages ago, also stopping boat owners from using the river is a disgrace.

Whilst this is good news, please note my recent comments on the matter of the closure of Hammersmith Bridge in an email to Fleur Anderson, which reiterated her view on the closure of the bridge -MT:'...the signifier for this highly unsatisfactory situation and the distressing and ongoing closure to vehicles reverberates through the following sentence from your last missive.'FA: 'I can't think of another government in the world that would let a massive bridge in their capital city remain closed for all this time."

The BBC link states:"From Saturday, boats will also be allowed to pass under the bridge again."

I am being horribly cynical here but I think the government is after some good news?Anything, anywhere!  I did say cynical!

I wonder what has actually changed?The temperature control system was installed months ago.It doesn't mention going under - what is the situation with boats?

Detail from council...Hammersmith & Fulham Leader Cllr Stephen Cowan has announced that Hammersmith Bridge is to re-open this weekend to pedestrians, cyclists and river traffic.The decision follows a series of comprehensive safety investigations into the bridge and the successful introduction of an innovative temperature control system that helps prevent cracking in the 19th century cast iron pedestals.Cllr Cowan announced the decision during a meeting with engineers at the bridge alongside Cllr Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond upon Thames Council.Cllr Cowan said: “I am very pleased to confirm the latest advice from safety engineers is that we can safely re-open Hammersmith Bridge. We have instructed the team to do that.
