Flooding

Flooding on Upper Richmond Road, also Dyers Lane and Fire Engines must be drains blocked. Barnes Bridge, all along Mortlake High Street. Our cellar flooded. Has anybody else been affected.

It's more than maintenance though.  I remember over 10 years ago guttering needing to be changed on a building because it wasn't adequate for the amount of rainfall and scientists have been warning about Climate Change for over 40 years.Brian May was commenting on the increasing numbers of homes which have had basements excavated to make more habitable space - it all adds to the problems.Privatising Thames Water - was it really worth it for us all - or just for a few?  Should it have been when this sort of thing is allowed to happen?https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-4313638/Vultures-left-Thames-Water-10bn-debt.htmlThere is usually a catalogue of coincidences leading to a bigger problem.

Our block's basement on URR was flooded possibly from Thanes Water drain. Two communual boilers destroyed.Very interesting comments Nick. The issue of maintenance comes up again and again in flood areas. Perhaps Putney is now one such area?

Commondale was completely inundated. Water poured through and under front doors and entered many houses. Extensive flooding caused much damage - you can imagine.It turns out that the storm drain running alongside the road under the Common from the Lower Richmond Road was overwhelmed. The drain covers burst at the top of the slope by the Bowls Club, water spewing in white water torrents into the flood inundating gardens and houses. The drain the runs along the road had already failed, it just couldn’t “swallow” the huge volume of water from the flash flood.We haven’t had the drains cleaned for years by Thames Water or the Council, As one of the Thames Water staff said to my wife “We don’t do any clearing anymore. You’ll have to write to your MP.” You could graze sheep on the grass growing in the gutter. The clippings from the edge of tge Common and mowed paths are dumped where they fall.The storm drain leads to the river. But at high tide the exit pipes are kept closed to prevent the Thames flooding back along the drain. They remained shut on Monday evening with inevitable results. We have videos of white water fountaining into the lake. It all happened so quickly.This was not an unexpected event. It will become increasingly common and it is the case that climate change has very real results for everyone. Thames Water does little. Government talks a good talk but does next to nothing,Nick

What has this got to do with Putney High Street Philippa, nothing. No gardens in Putney High Street , or Water Butts or gardens.

Penelope, I've seen the High street running like a river when it's rained really hard. When I worked on the Upper Richmond Road about 20yrs ago it rained so hard, Gwendoline Ave, the rain was pouring down onto the Upper Rich rd, I had to take my shoes off to cross the road. Putney High St, slopes down from the main line station, the rain just pours down the High Street.

Wonder if that's why Foodillic is closed.Anyone know if that's the same with Lost Society and also Spoho as imagine that's got a cellar.

Too many paved front gardens, patios, new buildings and tarmac and not enough water butts and other devices that slow the water down so that it does not all try and get straight to the drains all at the same time.In London our water isn't all separated into rainwater and foul water as it is in some other areas.  Here we have combined systems and that exacerbates the problem.  We actually use (unless we are rainwater harvesting) drinking water to flush our loos which seems rather extravagant considering all the people in the world who don't even have loos or potable tap water.Check out Climate Change and SuDs:  Sustainable Urban Drainage SystemsAn increase in hot weather can cause an increase in sudden heavy rainfall.It seems it is Germany which has problems now.  It was New York the other day which had flooded subways.We're one world.

Same Council as the one in Germany? Or could it be exceptionally heavy over a short space of time.

Appears a lot of damage in Putney due to the heavy rain the other day. Hotham School shut, problems in the High Street. Why hasn't the Council been clearing the drains like they used to. A lorry used to come round and do the job. Barnes has flowers growing out of their drains because they haven't been cleaned for so long.
