Princess Diana's Statue

Is bloody awful. In my opinion.

I agree, Michael.  Plus she was much loved.  I thought she was wonderful. The statue doesn’t do justice to her great beauty.

Isn't it because of her work with AIDS and landmine clearing charities? Perhaps that's why the sculptor has tried  to reflect a more serious side of her character?

The tragic manner of her death wouldn't seem to justify it

Waste of money whatever it looks like. There is a great statue of Diana in Bushy Park. Most people wouldn't know the difference.

Such a shame, would have been lovely with her 2 boys when they were young, or now grown up with arms around her. Also a Diana face. NOT OH MATRON.

Lifeless and conventional. Buck House has finally succeeded in imposing on Diana the kind of image they were hoping for all those years ago. Suggestion is that P Charles had a say in the statue's design - inflicting his own version of a  "carbuncle" on the face of London.

I agree, Sue.  I would have preferred a statue of her on her own or with her 2 boys rather than the 3 unknown children.  Really disappointed.

Anyway, back to Diana's statue. Unfortunately the sculptor has made her face look quite masculine and her body too chunky.  Diana was beautiful, very feminine and had a lovely figure but he chose to 'dress' her in the most unflattering way possible.  I have read that Ian Rank-Broadley's expertise is sculpting men so perhaps he should stick to that. At least the sunken garden looks lovely.

Thomas Thornycroft, the Victorian sculptor, had ample creative licence to portray Boudicca as he imagined her and as her reputation dictated. Of course nobody knows what she looked like anyway.A near contemporary statue - this time of a man- which captures both his looks and the essence of his character is the one of John Betjeman at Kings Cross.

Jane, I agree with the Boudicca statue ...https://www.flickr.com/gp/m-j-i/U4LSp6The Ixer name seems to originate in the Suffolk area and apparently an uncle of my father had a theory that the name originated from the Iceni tribe ... I don't think he had any evidence to support it though 😸I suppose if William and Harry are happy with the statue of Diana then it's ok?  Otherwise I don't really have a view.

Can anyone think of a good statue of a woman? Queen Victoria springs to mind but most of her statues were of her in old age and almost a cariacature.

Agreed, i remember very well that Diana always seemed to have a beaming smile whenever she was with kids... the statue makes her look like a stern nanny.
