In terms of space for pedestrians the new High Street paving is an improvement but there are problems as the traffic flow is not helped by the narrowing of this arterial road. Cyclists particularly experience difficulties because of the road widening. The perennial problem of inadequate street cleaning is acute and sections of the paving are dirty.Above and beyond these matters on Putney High Street what is to be wondered at is the now terrifying level of pollution. According to a leaflet that I was handed on Saturday - 'The legal safe limit for mean Nitrogen Dioxide, NO2 by the World Health Organisation is 40 micrograms per cubic metre of air, ugm3. The latest readings here on Putney High Street are 66 and 69ugm3. This clearly breaches the safety levels drawn up by WHO, putting our health at risk. At rush hour the levels will be much higher then 69 because these figures are averages so they include readings for 24 hours, each day of the year, which is even more terrifying.'...Is it then any wonder that XR (what ever you make think of their activities) so strongly and quite rightly critiques Wandsworth Council with regard to their commitment to reducing pollution levels in our midst?
