Bikers

Was so upset yesterday, there was a mum and her little boy, I mean little, the mum put her hand out to turn left into I think Erpingham Rd, her son copied her, his bike wobbled and he went into the curb the bike toppled over and he went into the bollard on the pavement. He was copying what his mum was doing, I felt so sorry for him.

With kids I must admit I'm extra caution.It's the parents decision to balance the risks and quite right too. Each child is different and parents are normally know their child best.But I have seen a few near misses with very young kids on the main road who have been very unstable. It is a learning process assuming that they get another chance of course, let's hope they do.

I thought this was a post about a Hell's Angels gang moving into Putney.  That would be a new topic for this forum!Maybe the lad will turn into a biker though - a lot of us did start on bicycles and making engine noises from a young age.

He seemed ok, he took his hand off the handle bar a wobbled, I must say I do think some children are just a little bit to young to be actually on the road. But in the same spot where the black bollards are I've seen a woman with her dog on the lead while she was cycling. Her dog decided to go one way road the bollard on the pavement and she went the other way, so I'm afrain she ended up on the floor as well.

yes, but he will learn from it and hopefully turn into a confident cyclist. The future belongs to the cyclist, not the motorist.

Yes, Sean, let's hope he's not deterred - or hurt badly - by the odd tumble and learns from it; although I'm not tempted back onto a bike because of the traffic in London, this is where I learnt to ride a bike in London in the late 1950s. It was a safe environment to get used to the basics of handling a two wheel bike and also was an introduction to the rules, signs and layoiut of roads of the dasy. If we want to promote more cycling perhaps we need more places like this now to promote cycling and help both drivers and cyclists to develop good habits using roads at an early age? I very much hope he gets back on his bike and carries on. I had many falls from my bike as a kid, but got better and better at cycling. 
Today it still gives me great pleasure to go for a cycle ride (and my slightly smaller belly is grateful too!)
