racist me

I eat diary, not vegan. XR female who reckons lots of BAME s are lactose intolerant and have their views shunned, especially in schools and is calling for 2 days weekly plant based foods.  However, this apparently makes me racist as I eat dairy.She is lobbying Brighton council.Do I have to choose which part of a zebra crossing I step on too?!What with Idris Elba, (gorgeous ) being called out as not being black enough, well, words fail me. It's a funny old world today

Martine  Well maybe we do need more legislation about anial welfare - something better here than in the States I think. The pictures of cows in the programme Liz Bonnin did on cattle in the States was heartbreaking.  We just eat much more veg and and a little meat or fish. I've tried to expand the number of vegan and vegetarian meals by finding more that we enjoy. The Gate where I had my last birthday meal out - it now seems a lifetime ago.  Only two of the group were actually vegetarian/vegan but the food is so good and varied that you it is difficult to choose easily and you certainly don't miss meat and can also easily avoid other animal products.

Finland is listed as the country with the highest amount of milk per head consumption apparently partly because they have a population that is very lactose tolerant (it is a genetic mutation) rather than intolerant.  I think it more likely that they realise they need to cater for those people whether their own or from many other countries who are not as lactose tolerant.

I used to fly internationally a lot and found Finnair issued a surprisingly high proportion of lactose-free meals - someone once told me lactose intolerance was highest in Finland and Japan, but didn’t know why, and this was pre-internet so I never did the research. I think you eat what suits your tastes and your personal convictions, and good for you if it keeps you healthy.  I don’t however think it’s right to impose one’s dietary views on anyone else though, laws aside.

We are one of a few countries in Europe who have a diet with such a high dairy intake.  My grandmother always reckoned it was a throw-back to butter and cream being rationed during the war.  (Rationing only ended in 1954.) There are other countries where goat's milk and yoghurt are preferred as they find that easier to tolerate than cow's milk products.Yes, restaurants need to be more adventurous in their vegetarian and vegan menus.  Surely we can all make a tomato and mozzarella salad by now!

Vegan food is making it into the mainstream now:https://www.veganfoodandliving.com/news/michelin-starred-chef-soho-restaurant-vegan/Fortunately, a lot of chain restaurants - Pizza Express, Catlucios, Wagamama, etc - have good, more modestly priced options, and the local restaurants like Ma Goa and Kashmiri have great vegan options. Further afield  there's Vegan Expess in Tooting, Riverside Vegetaria in Kingston and the Gate at Hammersmith.Not doing good veggie/vegan options is a way to lose group bookings.

Degrees of lactose intolerance varies but a majority of people have a degree of lactose intolerance. Northern europeans have evolved to best deal with lactose while south Asians are probably most intolerant: you won't find much dairy in Malaysian, Chinese, Indonesian or Japanese dishes - unless they've been adapted for European tastes. I believe thick yogurts (eg Greek) and hard cheeses have lower lactose contents so might be tolerated by many who have a moderate intolerance.
