Planes

There are so many more planes in the skies this week. My dog is sensitive to the noise hence I counted approx 3 within 6 minutes the other day! A welcome return to normality however the peace and quiet will be missed

I remember Concorde going overhead at 6pm every day.  It would streak overhead in a glorious cacophony of sound cutting through a silent sky (in those days). Standing in my Bendemeer Road garden babies would start to cry and dogs to howl after its passing.  The constant growl of sky noise wasn't there in those days. It does irritate me when people say you should have known when you moved here.so be able to see into the future with a Crystal ball, that everyone would be hopping around the world like fleas 45 years ago?  For the price of a bus ticket?  No I don't know anyone who anticipated that.As for more runways to facilitate transfer passengers from around the world for the financial benefit of the  airport, it's an appalling indictment against capitalism.

Me neither. I came in 1981. Had I known how it would develop I would have made a life elsewhere. Too late now.It's not just Putney. I've met people who live in south east London who suffer though the planes aren't as low there as by the time they get here. They don't want expansion any more than we do.The Inspector at the T5 inquiry only gave permission for that terminal on condition that aircraft movements were capped at 480,000 a year, because in his judgement to exceed this would make life intolerable for residents under the flight path. That was an expert speaking.

Fross since living in Putney for 40 years flight numbers have increased exponentially. I wouldn't move here now. Hope that answers your question.

So it's all right if a 3rd runway just impacts Barnes, Kew, Mortlake?

The third runway is still a distant chimera in these days of constrained air travel not to mention the realities of the climate emergency. However if it did ever happen then Heathrow’s current plans are that it would be used mainly by short haul flights thus reserving “our” runways for the larger noisier long haul flights - including that one from Hong Kong that comes over about 4.30am every morning. A third runway would have a direct detrimental effect on Putney residents.

The 3rd runway will not affect Putney it will be so far to the the right of us they will be going over Barnes/Kew/Mortlake so your doggies will sleep well. So, can someone still explain as to why you move to a flight path and complain?

Lucille is absolutely right. In Coalecroft Rd you literally cannot hear what someone next to you is saying, and in "normal" times they go over every 90 seconds. Alan says Heathrow affects 3% of our population, but it's more shocking than that. The Heathrow flight path is over Europe's most densely populated conurbation and affects more people than just about the rest of Europe combined.I wonder what those who want a 3rd runway feel about losing the half day's respite we are currently "allowed". That this will vanish was hidden on page 183 of Howard Davies' report.How do they feel about the study published in the European Heart Journal. Dec. 2020, that night flights can trigger heart attacks? Or Prof. Stephen Stansfeld's work confirming aircraft noise's negative impact on children's learning? Or work by Imperial College among others of the harmful effect on mental and cardiovascular health.Do they have a view of the effect on the environment of a 3rd runway's 56% increase in aircraft movements, an additional 260,000 flights a year?

Fross I have lived in Putney since 1980 and well remember Concorde flying above the house we lived in on Chartfield Avenue around 6.00 pm I think. I don't recall other plane noise before moving to Coalecroft Road where you couldn't hear yourself think if you sat out in your garden for the constant noise of the planes above. Now on Upper Richmond Road it is just as bad.

But Heathrow approach paths are over the most densely populated area of the country.  Something like 3% of the UK population are affected by Heathrow noise.  Crazy.

I have lived on the flight path all my life with no problem, I have lived through Concorde, I would love them to build a 3rd runway, it would bring so many needed jobs for us. Just a question, when you fly from Heathrow for your holidays do you give a hoot to the people beneath you, I think not.

I feel your pain and that fo your poor dog. Last summer was bliss without planes flying constantly overhead!
