to include activist who wishes to 'topple' everything from statues to roads, museums etc and has made a video against jab. Latest 'want' to cancel'   Geoffrey museum being so called  Wonder how Diane Abbott will react to that as it is in her constituency?

Ed, but I guess that's a step forward from the days when 100% of the cabinet, if not all of the Commoners and Lords, were privately educated?Interesting in that working in the new industry of IT in the 70s and 80s privately educated people seemed in the minority - or kept quiet about it, except for some business owners. Moving into financial services in a technology support role in the mid 90s was a bit like entering a world from the 19th century in some areas, or, as a colleague once said, the set of upstairs, downstairs ... although, as I said previously, things have now moved on.

Ed. How many of our recent of our recent prime ministers have been to Eton or other public schools? There are certainly parts of the City where there's a number of privately educated people kicking around - some obviously only around because of their contacts who have wealth to invest. It is changing, the FCA requirements for competency is thinning some out and, to be fair, many companies realise they're losing talented people by not attracting more diverse recruits.

London has been a diverse melting-pot of city for centuries and yet the majority of our monuments only celebrate upper-class white men.  If the Commission is designed to find ways to recognise and celebrate a greater diversity of people I think that’s a good thing - but that’s unlikely to be achieved by appointing a panel of upper-class white men, so the panel seems pretty sensible to me.

What happened in the far away countries of the past and wasn't talked about here or talked about much is becoming much more obvious as travel and communications make the world smaller.When I was small my parents and I travelled by boat then later by prop plane and then by jet plane.  Now I do most of my travelling on the internet.  We only heard half if that of what went on and a lot of pigeons are bound to come home to roost.  And with DNA tests now available we can find out who we are related to whether it is a British slave trader who did 'good works' here at home in the UK or a British Commissioner or British Army General who had a family in the UK and another in the colonies.  Why keep secrets?  Many of those statues should probably be in museums and definitely should have more information about the person on the pedestal.Time moves on and opinions change.

Andy I think your first post made more sense!On the subject of statues which I remain neutral.The problem with putting people on pedestals is that they like all of us are human and imperfect and sometime very complex.You will then get one side that claim they are saints and another that will claim they are completely evil. This makes any sensible discussion almost imposible.IMO there is only truth and like everything else an open and transparent view to history is key.The destruction of documents and the use of secrecy laws that keeps things hidden from 50, 100 years and even longer is evidence of a society hiding the truth!
