Are people are suggesting that he is not capable of making his own decisions?Assuming he can make his own decisions - and as Robert says - he is capable of weighing the risk and benefits:He is clearly over the age of consent and has the right to freedom which of course he helped to fight for. It therefore sounds agest to me to suggest otherwise.I hope he had a great holiday and that he recovers of course - but it may just be this kind of excitement that has kept him going!

Lucille, it said he didn't pick up pneumonia on the flight or Barbados.

It is quite possible he picked up an infection/pneumonia on the flight. I have read of others who caught covid when they were weakened by pneumonia or other chest infections. His immune system would have been weak and made him vulnerable.

I agree, Barbara - don't faint! - his daughter says 'over the last few weeks he was being treated for pneumonia and last week tested positive for Covid ...so he did not contract  Covid in Barbados or in the plane. He could not have the vaccine because of the medication he was taking for pneumonia

What I have just read in the paper he was only taken into Hospital yesterday and not in intensive care. So i would have thought he would have been home from holiday a few weeks now.

Unusually I agree with Robert here and Craig It was his dream wish to go. Having reached 100 in good health surely the quality of his remaining time is more important to him than the length. Of course I wish him well.

It’s his life, Lucille.  If he wanted to take the risk to fulfil an item on his bucket list, that’s his choice, surely?

I couldn’t disagree more.  Captain Tom is not senile and having listened to him speak clearly knows his own mind.  We don’t live in a communist state and if l am lucky enough to get to his age l would want to evaluate my own risks and be responsible for my own choices.  Many of my own family who work as doctors support this view.  I wish him well and a speedy recovery.

Having read first hand reports by NHS workers  who witness a Covid sufferer dying there is no way I would wish this on anyone, least of all Captain Tom, so the risk his daughter  took is  agreeing to this trip was irresponsible at best. I am also wishing him well, and for a miracle.

I think you're missing the point Craig - over 100 years old and travelling during a pandemic. Not sure any of us  should be surprised that poor Cpt Tom has fallen prey to pneumonia and  consequently Covid.

Funny how we perceive things differently, Sue.  I just saw someone who was immensely proud of her father and relishing the new lease of life it had given him...but maybe I’m just naively optimistic.

Covid-wise Barbados seems safer than the UK, but I wouldn't have thought it a good idea. But then I am not brave.

I suspect his family wanted to go and didn't give that a thought Lucille.  His daughter seemed to relish the media exposure rather a lot I thought.

Am really sad that  Captain Tom is  suffering from Coronavirus. According to news reports he apparently caught pneumonia and then the virus.
