Yet another phone scam: this time it's someone claiming to be from the police

I've just had a call from a man who quoted my name and said he was from the Metropolitan Police: they had just arrested someone who had a copy of my bank card. He sounded vaguely plausible, so as a preliminary check I asked him for the number on the card. Silence, followed by the call ending.It's just possible, I suppose, that this was genuine but if it was, why didn't he ring back? So a scam, I'm sure (though a quick search doesn't pull up any other examples), and I wanted to warn anyone else who fields a call like that: don't give anything away!

Well, there is one thing, David: when you can't remember where you left your keys/wallet/glasses, it's sort of reassuring that you can at least remember your childhood telephone number (mine was Burbage 239 - but scammers beware, I never use it in passwords). And you've missed out on that!

Some years ago I had a call from someone claiming to be from the Metropolitan Police, saying that a purchase had been made using my card (or Visa account, I guess) in Southside. Card was still in my wallet, so I thanked him and made my excuses and hung up.I guess that the line would have remained open and I would be expected to be ringing my "bank" to report this, and to be giving my details to some other crook unsuspectingly. Fortunately, I have always considered the telephone as somewhat alien and threatening, since my childhood. We did not have one until I was off to university.
