Yes Robert the fireworks started quite a while ago, my first thought was that it was too early for New Year celebrations so perhaps it was people celebrating freedom at 11pm!

No question, the Callaway household will be breaking the champers out, not necessarily at 11pm precisely but definitely before midnight as we will not be hanging around waiting for the bongs.  Now if we'd been in Edinburgh it might have been different!

Jane, I agree Sue meant well in trying to bring us together. Sadly some of us feel anger rather than sorrow over what's been lost but I won't dwell on that here. I've something more important to drink to at midnight: Ms Felicity Feline reaches her 21st year according to her official birthday assigned by the vet when she adopted us from Cats Protection (she might be a few weeks older) - although she'll probably sleep through it! I'm sure Sue will understand that. (Oh, and it'll be 2021 as well.)

I totally disagree with Sue over the EU and other issues but she was trying to bring us together so cheap jibes at 'champagne socialists' are inappropriate and hardly welcoming!Many of us do feel genuine 'sorrow' at leaving the EU as we think of ourselves as European as well as British. As the EM states ' For so many of us, this is a moment of great sadness ....'. It's not only a question of rights, trade etc.So I won't be joining in for a drink but I genuinely wish everybody a happy new year and let's hope 2021 will be a lot better than this one.
