The High Street is Dead, Long live the High Street!
I for one will not shed any tears for the demise of the pathetic British High Street as it is now. With very few exceptions our High streets are the same everywhere - full of bland boring brands all selling the same "Meal Deals" for £3.(Boots, W.H.Smiths M & S, Tesco etc.etc).Many owned by offshore hedge funds employing zero-hours staff on minimum wages. Compare with an average French, Swiss or German village even today. And as for the greedy absentee landlords now leaving their empty premises fall into disrepair and waiting for the community to clean up for them- best example here is the M & S site. M & S must have been a blue stock tenant every landlord could have wished for paying good money over decades on PHS. Yet Positively Putney choose to subsidise the landlord by doing up the run-down frontage for them, gratis no doubt. Surely the real anti-social elements here are not the poor unfortunate homeless dossing in the doorways but these money-grubbing landlord. So, no tears from me then - move the fatcat landlords on (we owe them zilch) - not the homeless.
