Pavements on the High Street

I am curious to know why the pavements on the High Street are being widened and what that means for emergency vehicles getting through as there is very little space for overtaking.

Much as I'd  like to believe it I cannot see  how widening the pavements will help PHS retailers at all. The  problems of the High Street are far wider than the new pavements are.

David,  are you sure about your comment?"there will be a lot fewer emergency vehicles, as there will be fewer accidents with fewer and slower cars on the roads?"Are you sure emergency vehicles only attend people who have accidents with cars?  No heart attacks, nobody falling seriously ill, no accidents in the home, no accidents in school grounds, no accidents in the work place, as a few examples.  And all of these will miraculously disappear thanks to fewer and slower cars on the road?

Surely, if the measures work, there will be a lot fewer emergency service vehicles, as there will be fewer accidents with fewer and slower cars on the roads?

This is a great improvement - hope not to be spoiled with shops blocking the footpaths with large A-boards on the public sector.

Good question. A common problem with segregated cycle lanes also restricting road widths in London. How on earth are cars or, for the anti-car brigade - buses, supposed to make way for ambulances and fire engines?
