Roehampton University In Crisis
The ballot for industrial action and the proposed vote of no confidence in Roehampton University's Vice Chancellor and Provost is fully justified. It is no coincidence that distinguished voices including Sir Simon Sharma and Akram Khan the University’s Pro-Chancellor, have spoken out against the proposed huge cuts of £3.2 million which very seriously threaten the employment of staff in the Schools of Arts and Humanities.Equally, the cuts threaten learning and teaching within this highly important local academic institution. My view echos that of Akram Khan: if you remove the voice of the arts and the humanities within a university you have a significant gap which cannot be filled. So many of Roehampton University's staff and students as well as respected critical commentators are clearly 'non placet.' In the face of such unpopular and appallingly unethical decisions the Vice Chancellor should resign.
