I agree Ivonne. In any case I suspect Starmer  bade his time until the EHRC report was published rather than take  any action against Corbyn who hung himself by his own petard with his comment post-publication. In any case Corbyn should have resigned after losing the Election so disastrously last year.

Hello Nick,There are many Tories in Putney and surrounding areas.  They do not necessarily agree with the current Tory government (be it policies or characters), which is very different to saying there are no Tories.I also believe that, regardless of your political inclination, being critical of the party you identify with to be a very healthy situation.  Following a leader of a political party blindly, a bit as a lap dog, to be very dangerous indeed. And I am not saying you are a lap dog!

Well, I am not too sure he was complicit in all this mess. Of course he was in the opposition cabinet but we do not know what he said at the time.  But on the same token, did Johnson and Gove not back Theresa May at the time?I also believe that loyalty and politics do not go hand in hand.

But dont forget for years the current leader sat alongside and said nor did nothing. Turning a blind eye to this is just as bad.Many in the 40s tried to use  'they were just obeying orders ' as a defence. It didnt wash then and it shouldn't wash now.

I dipped my toe in once Jonathan and was quite shocked by the ridiculousness of many of the posts and I really can't be bothered to wade through all the dross.  I recommend LBC for a really good mix of contributors from both right and left and every day there are politicians and other high profile public figures speaking or being interviewed.  For the Trump haters there are several daily doses of Simon Marks the well known international affairs journalist who is also a prolific tweeter.

Yes I agree!  Lots of nutters out there on Twitter some of whom seem to live in strange parallel worlds. Having said that I have started following several interesting folk such as Iain Martin and Andrew Neil on the right, and a couple of Guardianista journos like Luke Harding on the left.  Makes for an interesting balance of viewpoints. Also people like the Secret Barrister (rather more than just another “lefty lawyer”) and one or two Tory and Labour politicians. You just have to be selective and not follow some of the more bizarre threads that pop up all the time.

There have been several cases of Tory councillors being suspended and more than a few MPs have come out with dodgy remarks.  I agree it’s probably not as bad as Labour’s problem but an enquiry was promised and is not happening. Why not?  The EHRC has let them off the hook so far because they have promised to set up an internal enquiry. But they could still intervene. A Tory Baroness seems to think there's a case for the Tory party to answer regarding islamaphobia - see link. I must admit as an atheist I'm reluctant to get involved in these squabbles. Although as someone who thought Sir Keir would make a good leader I think this is going to be a difficult one to deal with but as he said it is up to the party mechanism to come to a conclusion. I might be wrong but I suspect most of the press are happier to highlight Labour's issues than the Conservative's ones but perhaps I'm just being too cynical? The whole thing - whether it's antisemitism in the Labour party or islamaphobia in the Tory party - just convinces me in taking an atheistic approach. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2019-50834287

I think Boris and the Govt have a lot more to deal with than a flimsy case of alleged Islamophobia Jonathan.  What examples will the inquiry be looking at?  Johnson's letter-box and bank robber quips were stupid and regrettable but cannot be classed as hateful.

This is another essential (in my view) step Starmer has to take to make the party electable again. It was not totally credible under Miliband but never was and never would have been under Corbyn. All very reminiscent of Kinnock’s efforts to drive the hard left out. Starmer is getting attacked by the Tories because he does look like a credible alternative PM even if some of the shadow cabinet are still untested in combat. Any news on when the Tories will start their Islamophobia enquiry?  Promised by all the candidates in the Tory leadership contest. The promise buried by the PM along a number of his other promises: oven-ready deal, social care policy etc etc etc.

None who would admit to it.  I believe the Momentum Mob have been busy crowdfunding and McCluskey/Unite are threatening legal action to have Corbyn reinstated.  Starmer has done the right thing but his action could totally split the party and fatally scupper its chances in the next GE.  Not that it had much chance of success anyway.

Imo Starmer kept quiet purely because he didn't want to compromise his position as leader-in-waiting.  He was on the front bench and should have spoken up sooner.  Listening to his sanctimonious sermon today made me feel quite nauseous.

Presumably he shouldn't comment and prejudice any court proceedings. Yes, if she's found guilty he should comment and take appropriate action but as for everyone else - innocent until proven guilty?

IMO Starmer did the right thing - bided his time to gain the leadership and then get rid of the anti semites  once the report was completed. Rather pointless to have done it before as has been proved by the Jewish MPs who left the  Party rather than continue to fight from within. Having said that I don't blame  Luciana Berger et al for leaving when they did. It must have been horrendous.

@Andy 16.03Apsana Begum has been a big supporter of Corbyn.  No coincidence that she got her council flat so quickly? A flat she wasn't even entitled to anyway.  Has Starmer said anything about the £300k housing fraud charges being brought against her?

It was a quick decisive move by Starmer today but I find it hard to believe he didn't have an inkling about Corbyn's antisemitism before it came to this.  However I think Starmer kept his head down and kept quiet so as not to rock the boat when the party was doing well in the polls, which doesn't say much for his integrity.

Can only say 'about time too' His response today illustrated just how blind he is to his own antisemitism (racism) . The Labour Party needs to rebuild itself without such people. Only then might they stand a chance of winning an Election.

He has also had the whip removed from the Parliamentary Labour Party."Mr Corbyn had reacted to a damning report into antisemitism by saying the number of complaints made during his tenure were "dramatically overstated".He then gave a press conference in which he repeated this and insisted "I'm not part of the problem".Shami Chakrabarti was part of his cover-up and was honoured by him as reward for her part.  She should have her 'Baroness' revoked.
