And the US are demanding that origin labelling is scrapped. If it’s a manifesto commitment and the government has promised to maintain standards then why not enshrine it in law? There’s plenty of room for fudge and it’s already impossible to know where restaurant and takeaway food is sourced, unless it’s “Dover sole” or “Angus beef” etc. My feeling is that there will be two standards - those for home producers and those for cheap lower standard imports. The Brexiteer calculation, it seems to me, is that cheaper imported food will be used to head off criticism of job losses elsewhere, including in British farming where only the premium producers might survive. Or am I wrong?
