That might explain why this Spitfire was flying over Down House, Charles Darwin's home, near Biggin Hill. A friend who volunteers at the Imperial War Museum confirmed its identity. There is something very special about those Merlin engines. When I was growing up we lived on the flight path into Woodford aerodrome (remember that word?) where they built the Lancasters and Shakletons (as well as Vulcans). I always rushed out to see them. I last saw a Lancaster two years ago over Cirencester on its way to an air show.  Wonderful sound!

I know what you mean about sounds being very evocative.  It was the same when Concorde flew over Putney twice a day and I felt compelled to look up. Marvellous sight and sound!  I hate flying but I miss that plane lol.

Yes, although I think it's the sound that is more distinctive and impressive - a throwback to a different era and a reminder of my parents' generation. In fact, it was the sound that alerted us and got one of my friends very excited. The private executive jet that went over later was very unimpressive 🙂
