Cyclist/Electric scooters without lights at night

Cyclist and even electric scooters are using the main roads at night in Putney without lights. Unless this is stopped there will be fatalities.

To return to the thread, as a motorist and pedestrian (my cycling days are over) I have certainly seen cyclists after dark riding at speed with no lights, dark clothes often with hoods and no reflective aides whatsoever. They are an accident waiting to happen. I do not wish ill on anybody, but if one were to be run over I would feel as sorry for the traumatised driver as I would the cyclist.

Hate to say it Barbara but I walked past Chelverton Court this afternoon and there isnt a "massive plant pot full of earth" outside. Even if there was I dont see how a skateboard would have the force to knock one over..Perhaps you misremembered?

I agree with Barbara that these e-scooters can whizz by you alarmingly close and at such speed as I nearly went into shock when one did that to me.  I was walking in single file along a noisy road and it came from behind me so fast and close that I'm not sure whether I felt the air movement or saw it in front of me first.  It was not a pleasant experience at all.I just wish they would learn some road rules and some etiquette but I suppose it is now too late for that.  I'm happy that it is a better way to travel than by car.  It has got rather wild out there.  We need the 20mph enforced too so that those few who drive crazily and fast through residential roads are caught before there is a tragedy.

I don't think you make things up Barbara, you just sound worryingly prone to near misses. Are people afraid to walk anywhere with you? Thanks for clarifying that the lorry driver was foreign by the way, important bit of info that.

Matt, I don't make things up to get attention. It happened by the old people's home and was very dangerous. Just like a lorry wanted to reverse so drove into the entrance to the bus garage, laughing because he just missed me. I screamed at him and he laughed well the foreign man wasn't laughing long because as he reversed he reversed right into all their motorbikes outside the garage. To my delight guess what a Police car was opposite right outside the old chinese. OK they said we will deal with this. Ha Ha Ha.

You do seem to have a number of dramatic near misses on a regular basis Barbara, are you sure its safe for you to go out at all? Skateboards, scooters, bikes, whatever next!?

Even a skateboard going down the road I live the wrong way in the middle of the road was going at such a speed, the board shot away from him missed me by about 2ft continued going past me right into Chelverton Court then knocked over a massive plant pot full of earth. What would that have done to persons legs or a child going to school.

Barbara I agree about Quill Lane that is why I mentioned enforcement. To get us to the green and clean environment most people want we actually need more enforcement of existing laws and amend out dated ones.

Ed, the electric scooter's are able to go very fast, I was nearly knocked over in Quill Lane by one. No bikes are meant to be ridden in the Lane. The thing that worries me is if it's dark they could wizz past an elderly person/or young grab their bag phone etc, and gone in a flash. I think sometimes men forget women are meant to be the weaker sex, but because it doesn't bother them it doesn't matter.

A electric scooter is better than a noisy polluting moped which is what many people would have had when they were teenagers.We need the law updated urgently to allow for these new forms of transport and enforcement to make sure the law is followed.Spain can do it but the UK is just too slow.They are here now and we need to deal with that fact. The Government needs to face up to its responsibilities. (Dream on Ed!)

Well I've read of cyclists crashing into the temporary plastic barriers and Road Closed signs.  Sometimes cyclists have delivery boxes and those scooter deliveries have too so they presumably don't know how wide their vehicles are and just keep going.  If they insist on going down a road which has become one way they are a danger to themselves and others.

Not sure I get what road closures have to do with anything. London’s hardly dark enough for anyone to crash into them for lack of lights, if that’s what you’re inferring. And before it’s suggested, I’m not pro riding without lights. Just amazed this is a subject worth mention here.

No, but they get themselves in much more of a pickle when they find that the routes that they normally take in the dark have got Road Closed signs and plastic barriers.  Whether or not the new traffic restrictions around the country are delayed or not these cyclists and scootists would do themselves as well as the rest of society a favour by getting and using LIGHTS and REFLECTIVE clothing and probably helmets as well.
