Venice is best in November when the crowds are tolerable and the locals try harder. You might need those awful brightly coloured plastic over-shoes if there’s a high tide but it’s so atmospheric and wonderful.  No traffic, not even the sound of it in the distance. Just footsteps and the puttering of the occasional boat.

We've been back several times but it is getting rather full of tourist so I'm not sure how pleasant it is to live and work there - perhaps OK if one doesn't have to work and can just sit around in cafes sipping coffee or wine and eating pizza and pasta - and salads! 🙂

I went to Venice a couple of times in the 80's too and I loved it. Unique, romantic and mysterious.  Even the smelly backstreet canals didn't spoil  the magic for me.  Would love to live there.

Thanks, Philippa. It would be quite nice to go to Venice at the moment when there aren't vast crowds, although it wasn't so bad back in the 1980s when that was taken.

That's a super picture.  I tried taking something a bit like that with the Wharncliffe viaduct recently while on a walk.Also walked over Hammersmith Bridge recently and was impressed with the peace and quiet and lack of smelly and noisy vehicular traffic.  Even the usually badly behaved cyclists seemed better behaved and only saw one not dismounting as instructed the by the signs on the bridge.  Shame they don't behave as well on Hammersmith Mall.  Lots but not too many people walking along and over the river and enjoying a Sunday stroll.

People openly standing on bridges in broad daylight should be banned. It may be acceptable in Italy but not here in London!Well at least until Hammersmith Bridge is open :-)
