phone calls

Today received another stupid call to tell you you have a problem and will be cut off. Then your told to press 1 to speak to the operator, well don't cut off all of a sudden you get a voice a rather husky deep voice, kept saying hello, hello, I kept him at this for a while then he hung up. If you don't put the phone down he can't make another call.

I never answer any call that says "international".  The no caller ID is a tricky one and so is "withheld"  as that is often my sister who is ex-directory.Best thing is to let it go to answerphone and see who it is before you pick up.  Yes, I'm old fashioned and still have a landline, mobile reception is rubbish in our building.

Ben, I have had genuine calls on my mobile from hospitals which were not in my contact list nor did I recognise the number. Sometimes it said ‘no caller ID’

I thought that the caller not disconnecting problem had been resolved and this 2018 posting on a BT community forum seems to confirm that. But I agree, be wary of unknown callers and hang up if unsure. You have control, assert it. "Hi, welcome to the forums.You are posting on a thread around 7 years old.These days, you should be able to simply hang up the call and it should disconnect after a few seconds. Up until a year or two back, the person calling could hold on to the call for 90 seconds before it disconnects (if the called person hung up)."

They've been happening a lot recently. First one was just 'This is your internet provider', we're cutting you off, press 1. Then it was This is BT Openreach, same story. Been several others. Just hang up!

There is also a scam that allows a caller to still be connected and listen into calls that you make or take on a landline. Best thing to do is disconnect such a phone at the wall and then reconnect. There is a variation with mobiles, best advice with those is not to pick up any number that is not in your phone (comes up as a contact) or that a number you know by sight.
