Shamima Begum should defend her appeal in the UK

The Court of Appeal has just ruled that Shamima Begum should return to the UK to defend her appeal against the removal of her British citizenship after she joined ISIL.

@Michael - We can't say there was any failures with the UK Border Agency. The Home Secretary was just in the job for 10 years!

Ed. If a teenager (even if under 18) has a valid ticket and travel documents is it the airlines responsibility to question the nature of their travel? I'm sure some travel on their own to go to and from boarding school in foreign countries? Isn't it up to the UK Border Agency, who have access to passenger information?

Sorry from starting at the beginning.Did we ever get to the bottom of how these 15 year olds and one 16 were able to leave?I recall Turkish Airlines got all the blame probably because there is no border control on exiting the country.Where they fined? Procedures changed? Or just let it all die down???

Ivonne. That's my understanding. I'm doing this from memory, but I seem to recall that if she wanted to be a Bangladesh national she should have applied before a certain age. As she didn't do that she is no longer eligible. So the UK appears to have only one option ...

I believe Bangladesh said many months ago that Shamima Begum is not eligible for Bangladeshi citizenship.  This happened shortly before Javid revoked her British citizenship.

My understanding is she can claim Bangladeshi citizenship as its where her father lives, so not entirely stateless.

If she loses the appeal does anyone think she'll then be sent back to the camp. ? Somehow I doubt it. They'll be all sorts of mad mobs protesting to keep her here. Anyway itll give the marchers and pan bangers something to do.

Presumably once she's been heard in the UK and regained her citizenship, she'll be sent straight to jail and put on a deradicalisation programme?

That's what i mean, it shouldnt have even gone to court because the goverment knew its actions were illegal.

In a democracy justice has to be done, and seen to be done. It was the UK's society that created the atmosphere allowing her to be subverted by extremists.  The UK has to take responsibility for resolving the issue. Legally we can't leave someone stateless - we've signed up to the treaty.

It was obviously at the very start of this process (as many people on here said) that the goverment would lose this case and all they have done is line the pockets of lawyers.

This is the right decision but it’s going to anger a lot of people not least in the Home Office.
