PMQs - Wrong answer Mr Johnson!

From the BBC's live reporting: The prime minister ends the session in high spirits, as he claims EU laws are to blame for a "loophole" allowing meat to be labelled as being from the UK, if it is packaged there. Lib Dem MP Alistair Carmicheal says the rule is harming the beef farmers in his Orkney and Shetland constituency and asks if it can be changed in future trade negotiations. Take back control, what? What a despicable cheek!

I agree Michael, it may be a stringent requirement of the US Trade Department not to label the food with the country of origin (and preferably not labelled at all).  It is something the UK should not accept without a stringent requirement of its own. What are negotiations for then?But Johnson's claim about the EU's "loophole" is dishonest to say the least. For starters, all producers in the EU must abide by the same standard of food production and processing. Also, why "blame" the EU regulations?  It was my understanding we have already left the EU - or perhaps he has forgotten.  Or Cummings did not remind him....

It is a stringent requirement of the US Trade Department for any trade agreement with the UK that meat products are NOT labelled with country of origin - else how else will they sell us chlorinated chicken and hormone-treated beef.
