Remainers fault

Had the Remainers respected the result of the Referendum they would not be so wholeheartedly disliked. So much strife and animosity could have been avoided  In all probability the election would not have been called let alone won so decisively by the Tories.  Just think.  No Cummings! The good thing for me is no Anna Soubry!. Unfortunately, too many things were said and done, some very hard to forgive yet alone forget.So, yes.  I do blame the Remainers.  And to me it is a no brainer.  They were totally in the wrong and still are unable to accept culpability.However, we must consider the future. A whole new world.  The EU had many things I found distasteful but equally so much that was good. If only it had not been managed by, on the whole,greedy, self serving people. Let's just hope that our own MPs can truly think of what is best for us and work together without too much dogma getting in the way

Are Remainers wholeheartedly disliked then? I for one have got over it, maybe you should too. Brexit has been done. I intend to draw a line under it. But own what comes next - the culpability is now all yours.I don't care either way about Anna Soubry - what is she to us in Putney? I do regret the loss of an excellent local MP in Justine Greening.

And you will find that all the privatising and fragmenting of services brings with it contracts with companies involving a whole host of familiar people.  So the EU was full of self-serving people was it?

Thanks Jane. I've been enjoying the weather thanks to having a large terrace to sit out on but only going out to shop locally. Jean still suffering with painful chest and dreadful fatigue. Not a fast recovery at all.

Well Craig, the good or bad news is that the UK doesnt have a written constitution.There is nothing to stop future governments giving or trading away sovereignty. No referendum is required.

What we’re realising is that for some people on both sides of the argument, it turns out if wasn’t actually about the EU at all.  It was really about a deep-seated hatred / bitterness of those on the other side that will just keep flaring up over any old issue.  Sad really

What I always find remarkable is the tribalism from both sides.Difficult to break that down unless people say why they held one view or another.A small technical point I always make is to remind both sides that NI hasn't left and hence the UK as a whole hasn't.But them again it always seems odd to me that people bang on about Brexit and forget we are a union of 4 countries.

You’re right, Craig, it was all so long ago. There had been talk about us all coming together as a country to face this pandemic and the lockdown. Looks like that was wrong. For the record I remain an unreconstructed Remainer and I doubt I will be changing my mind any time soon.  I look forward to evidence, one day, that I was completely wrong but I’m not holding my breath.  A lot of unpleasant things were said by people on both sides of the argument. I always tried to avoid personal attacks though I have been on the receiving end of a few. Time to move on, surely?

The referendum was four years ago.  Leavers won.  We’ve left.  If you really want us to come together, stop banging on about it!

Referendums don't change people's views. A vote to leave the EU isn't in itself going to change the beliefs of those who believe leaving is on balance detrimental. Similarly, many in Scotland still want independence in spite of the last referendum result to remain in the UK and I suspect many in Ireland still believe abortion and divorce are wrong despite the votes to change the Irish constitution. It's only persuasion and demonstration of benefits or changes in understanding that will change opinions. Another issue with referendums is when the abstentions are greater than the votes between the winning and losing options: is the result then a true representation of views? In a free democratic society we have free speech so it is a right to dissent from the status quo unless a view is deliberately detrimental to others (for example, blocking access to employment because of race, sex sexual orientation or preference, religions, etc). Others voted for this government, we've got to live with it but have a right to point out its shortcomings and lies. And don't forget, there were both another UK and EU election between the Brexit referendum and last December's election when the incumbent party didn't get an overwhelming mandate.

As a remainer, I expect the government to deliver on its promise that we will be better offf out of the EU. Personally, I don’t see this happening at all, a new agriculture bill which lower our food standards and prepare for an American trade deal that will leave us worse off, open to America calling the shoots and currently be handled by Liz Truss...Then we have an extension period with the EU which isn’t even being considered while the pandemic puts us so much nearer to higher taxes, a recession and not be able to access the EU’s expertise. Also we won’t be in there programmes to fight the pandemic as those emails will get lost in the post or ignored to push on with Brexit. We will be once again a third rate country but blue passports (which we already could have had).

Johnson purposely stopped his Brexit laws from being passed by Parliament and sacked most of his 'Remainers', so 'getting Brexit done' could continue to dominate the General Election, which gave him victory. Equally, the Labour Party floated the possibility of Remain, which helped them lose in the 'Leave' parts of the country. The present Tory victory was clearly delivered by Brexit supporters, with the Remainers pretty well routed.

Barbara, thousands have died and many more will do so because of the pandemic. Each death is a tragedy be they remainers or Brexiteers so please can you not put aside your own wholehearted dislike of the former? 'Culpable' for what? Nobody is trying to stop Brexit so Give Brexit a Break please and let's focus on the biggest, life and death issue of our times.
