I'm not sure we can rely on the good intentions, or even the grey matter, of employers to provide a safe working environment for their workers. That's what laws and regulations are for.  The draft workplace lift-off guidelines seem full of 'where possibles' and 'if it's not too much trouble', which the unions have understandably rejected.

I really don't see what's confusing. It all seems pretty clear to me. I expect when lockdown is released there will be those individuals and businesses who will expect a bespoke plan for them as individuals or businesses. NO listen to the advice and ended it into your daily life. The Health and Safety Act and Factories Act give ths broad outline of how to operate it is not specific to all scenarios. People have to use their own grey matter it's not that difficult really.

Agreed, Peter, there is certainly confusion over the messages giving rumours or leaks from government and newspapers plus I heard suggestions of street parties in front gardens. I'm sure if one set up chairs in one's front garden and then got caught dancing in the street one could argue you'd just popped out for a bit of quick exercise ... and if these was some official encouragement easily construct a case for reasonably leaving your home that the police wouldn't want to argue with on VE Day? I'm not sure any reasonable excuses not listed in the statutory instrument have been tested in court yet? (Difficult, and slow,  if it went up the appeals hierarchy?) Certainly some confusion at present.

Is a 'street party' permitted exercise? Travel to work? Shopping for food? On our walk yesterday afternoon we had to plot a safe route through several of these illicit pavement gatherings, which I now see were part of some officially encouraged celebration which added 'having a picnic', 'raising a glass' and 'singing along' to the weekly clapping ritual. Talk about mixed messages, not helped by newspapers floating all kinds of 'lockdown liftoff' scenarios which the government then has to try and stifle.

Our Street had that kind of well distanced street party too.

There were about 20 of my neighbours out in the street yesterday. We all came out at 5pm, a couple of musical kids performed for us, we sang “We’ll meet again” and generally had a good social occasion, all at 2 metres distance from each other. The occasional car came through but otherwise a great occasion.  Once lockdown is over we’re going to have a proper street party!

I didn't say there was a problem with a street party wondered if there had been any. Charlwood Rd a few houses people having a drink outside their homes.

Looked like the remnants of one in Disraeli Road when we were on our exercise walk. Those still around seemed to be social distancing, so I can't see any issue.

Also Dryburgh Road.People are in their front gardensand drives celebrating VE day. Good on them (all keeping distance but being social)
