It was interesting that the BBC R4 programme More or Less that explains and investigates statistics had to explain how the R number could be decimal (R=0.5, 0.7, 1.1, …) rather than an integer (R=1, 2, … ). It shows a disappointing level of maths education in the UK (or perhaps it's just those 0.7 members of the average family that have a problem?) but perhaps it would explain why (as I believe exponential increases also had to be explained) scientists might resort to the FUD factor to get the populations to follow the lockdown rules. (FUD: fear, uncertainty, doubt.) I don't necessarily agree with the use of "FUD", it's certainly frowned in the the technology circles I move in, but  sometimes its seen as the only option of last resort (for example, just ask anyone if they wanted to be CEO of Talk Talk or Traveled when the brown stuff hit the fan 😺 So I'm not sure what the point of this poart if the challenge is? Talking of More or Less, they've also investigated and analysed the daily testing figures and - guess what - the government's never really met it's 100,000 tests a day target, or at leasdt from the responses they got to questions it certainly sounds like they couldn't prove it to any self respecting auditor. So it looks like Mr Hancock's maths education is lacking and he should liusten to More or Less, or he's being, er, what's that phrase? Economical with the truth? Anyway, looking at the respondents in this thgread, think I should start using the Ike Mixer non de plume …
