Sainsbury's new opening hours from Monday, 23 March 2020

We received a communication from Sainsbury's CEO this morning.  The salient points were: From Monday 23rd March, we are consolidating our opening hours and all our supermarkets will be open from 8am to 8pm, Monday-Saturday, including those with an Argos store. Sunday opening, Sainsbury’s Local and petrol station opening times will stay the same. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all our supermarkets will dedicate 8am - 9am to serving elderly, disabled and vulnerable customers, as well as NHS and Social Care workers. They will just need to show us their pass or ID when they visit. I want you to know that we are doing all we can to support everyone who works in our business. We have committed to paying all colleagues who are unwell or need to self-isolate for the full period of fourteen days. We have also committed to paying vulnerable and elderly colleagues in full if the government decides they should isolate for 12 weeks. Thank you Sainsbury's!

Caroline, brilliant news today on Andrew Marr.  Sainsbury's has a dedicated slot for HNS and social care workers every day between 7.30 and 8 am.  Thank you Sainsbury's.

I'm sure they do have canteen facilities for when they're working in hospitals, although probably not in smaller health care centres. They still need provisions for home and, as you say, may have families to provide for. If they're single they'll have no one else to do their schooling but will still need loo roll at home!

Michael I know they have to feed their family NHS staff but do they not have a staff canteen also to get food while on duty. I know they need food for home as well as essentials.

I couldn't agree more.  They were working ridiculously long hours before all this.  Now they have to train to use equipment and do jobs in a few hours which would in other circumstances take a lot longer.  Tiredness can lead to momentary but catastrophic mistakes.  Grandparents like me have been banned from carrying out supportive childcare and household chores.

I saw the nurse in tears video and I felt nothing but symphony for her and an increased hatred for the scum who reduced her to that.

Perhaps the supermarkets could arrange deliveries for NHS staff to hospitals, clinics, health centres, etc. It would save time for those people who are very busy and may need to be on shift during the special shopping time? It might also guarantee them getting what they needed if shop staff picked it before it went on he shelves? We should be assisting NHS staff as much as possible!

Perhaps you are correct.However, I thought by distributing it over three days, it will probably reduce the queue?Not sure.

Well Caroline, it may not be ideal but it is a start.After watching that nurse in tears because could not find food or that old lady looking defeated in front of empty shelves...  We must start from somewhere!And I agree, keeping the distance is hugely important - something the NHS staff may be aware of?  Apologies, this sounded awful and it was not meant to be.  Sorry!!

Is it a good idea to mix over 70s and NHS workers? Especially as there doesn't seem to be a plan to keep people a metre+  away from each other.
