I doubt the two incidents are connected, most likely coincidence. ATM removal by brute force is not normally carried out by the same gangs as ATM fraud. The ones in Putney were most likely fixing skimming devices to the ATMs (as has happened previously to Barclays in PHS), although it's possible they could have been working with someone who downloaded malware to the ATMs so the could "unload" the cash but unlikely as hopefully that vulnerability has been closed and end of the weekend is a poor time before Monday morning's cash refill. Far better to fit a skimmer and get all the people's card details when they replenish their wallets Monday after the weekend's expenditure?
