Apparently about 58% of refugees/migrants are men over 18 and come from a range of places - Afghanistan, Africa and middle east avoiding war, poverty, political instability - and, as we know, some are trafficked from places such as Vietnam. So it's not that straightforward, as Sean says they are probably good reasons why many are men, and if they're economic refugees men often find it easier to travel and find work so they can then send obey home to their families. (Interestingly, I've come across some men who are Indian nationals working in the UK legitimately who have had to leave their families behind in India.) I heard a story about a Syrian doctor who came ahead to Germany and his family joined him later once he was settled there. As Bunny says, most Syrians are very well educated and before the war had a good standard of living (as did Iraq before the wars there). The middle eastern wars, including the current ones in Syria - plus the Yemeni one in Arabia - have been a disaster for the region. Perhaps it's time to join up with the EU and lobby Putin and Trump who are aggravating this problem to assist with it and perhaps take in some refugees from this mess?
